Killed Them All, Of Course

from Hyperverse by Reckless Ways

lyrics

The sun's eclipsed by the biggest machine the likes of us have ever seen
The curtains gently swaying with an unfamiliar orange glow
My mother drops her coffee on our freshly finished hardwood flooring when she sees
The chaos happening down our street
The neighbors out, pajamas, socks, their babies crying, their cats and dogs howling

Look up

The media blitzed the curbs in hopes of a statement
Their vans pulverized any semblance of our lawn
Marines shouting over the clacking of their tank treads
Missiles, muzzles, telescopes, pointed towards the stars

And here I am,
Staring, gaping, in the wake of a NASA poster-covered wall
When my old three-ring binder of theories blows open
Pages turning in a cascade of ballpoint art
Of starships, Martians, asteroids, Saturn's rings
I want to greet these things
Not be too swift to violence
Would that be remiss of us?

Do you believe they'd really harvest us all?
(Do you believe, won’t believe, can't believe?)
Or do you believe they'd let us harness their knowledge for our own self interest?
I'm not so sure

Because the more I contemplate a culture of this advancement
I'm enthralled by the thought of harmony rampancy, the intellect, reason-seeking
So take me, I want to see the star systems that I've only read about in books
Take me, I'm not too confident that the fate of my race is as good

They breathe our air
The mothership drops smaller ships
Filled with their infantries and nearing
As landing gear unfolds, cold fear
shoots through the militantly minded
Our fleets are swarmed and liquefied
As if our guns are no deterrent

And just as fast as they came, they headed back to their vessels
I get the sense this dot was nothing but a routine, mundane pit stop for them
I ran as fast as I can to the baseball field they docked
Picked a rock up and chucked a fastball to the back of the last one boarding and
It turned and caught it, as each gasp did shrink, laid eyes on me and smiled, I think

Do you believe they'd really harvest us all?
(Do you believe, won’t believe, can't believe?)
Or do you believe they'd let us harness their knowledge for our own
Do you believe they'd really harvest us all?
(Do you believe, won’t believe, can't believe?)
Or do you believe they'd let us harness their knowledge for our own
Self interest?
